The inner workings of my simple balcony koi pond filtration system. Filter size – 1′3″ (L) x 2′ (W) x 1′ (D). Filter is made up of only two chambers: 1st chamber consists of: 1 x PVC stand 2 x bio-filter foam mats 2 x mesh bag crushed corals 1 x mesh bag ceramic bio rings 2nd chamber consists of: 36 x bio balls 2 x japanese filter mats 50% water change is implemented once every two weeks. Filter is cleaned once a week due to its small capacity.

Koi’s are only fed once a day – from Monday to Friday with Wheat Germ and from Saturday to Sunday with Spirulina. 50% water change is implemented once every two weeks. Filter is cleaned once a week due to its size. Overstocking in the tank has naturally caused the fish to remain small in size. In addition, many of these koi’s are from specially chosen stock, where the parent koi have not grown more than 12-14 inches. With the knowledge that not every koi has potential to become jumbo, I am in the process of trying to create my own bonsai or toy koi stock. This is a view of my other clear water garden with more advice. (I fought green water from July – Labor Day this year until my waterfall pump gave up the ghost. It had been slowly pumping less and less water and I didn’t realize it. As soon as I replaced it with a new efficient pump, my water cleared up within days. Final word of advice is to have a pump that can pump 3/4 of your water thru the filter hourly.)
