Our 1000 gallon koi pond showing the fish feeding and pond plants that keep the water clear. Almost a year later after construction, koi thriving and no algae. It could have been larger but it was our first time building a pond on this scale. Next, I think I am going to design a labyrinth of above ground retangular boxes which will require learning about masonary. This was an educational process were we learned about skimmers, pumps, filtering systems, excavating, surveying, and the hobby of rasing koi. Just goes to show you never know until you try. Without our sculpture none of our hard labor would have looked as good, thanks Dave…To everyone else thinking about building a pond just do your research and stay positive:) Original video, www.youtube.com Dixiedog2u.

Quick tour of my backyard Koi pond. It is about 1200 gallons. There are 6 koi, 7 or 8 goldfish, a bullfrog, and a bunch of fry. There are two pumps. One runs the main waterfall at about 2500 gph. The other runs the filtration at about 400-600 gph. The filtration consists of a store bought (I think it’s a sunterra) pressure filter for mechanical and some biological, then feeding to a Pondlife Turbo-Twist 3X 9 watt UV, and then to a DIY Biofilter.
